Product Details
Five ounces of silver in flawless mirror quality
At 155.5 grams of 999 silver, this issue carries a weight that becomes noticeable the moment it is picked up. The diameter of 65.00 millimeters creates a generous field in which every line of the engraving is given room to breathe. As a result, the coin reads less like a means of payment and more like a small relief in silver.
It is struck in proof quality, the most elaborate finish in the collector segment. Carefully polished dies and multiple striking stages create mirrored surfaces from which the design elements stand out in fine contrast. For the 5 ounce buffalo of the Big Five III series this is the first issue in that quality, after the motif had already appeared once in the 5 ounce format.
Motif and Design
Two sides that let a herd emerge
The obverse shows the fully grown buffalo in its entire form, powerful and dynamic in posture, as if the movement had been halted for only a moment. The depiction is complemented by the inscriptions SOUTH AFRICA and BIG FIVE 2026 as well as the South African coat of arms, which give this silver coin its sovereign framework.
On the reverse, two halves of a buffalo head meet. Only when two coins lie next to each other does a complete close-up portrait come together, and anyone lining up several examples watches an entire buffalo herd take shape. At the centre stand the face value FIVE RAND, the weight 5OZ and the fineness Ag 999.
A delicate engraving of the cattle egret points to the principle of an integrated ecology. Across many African landscapes this bird accompanies large grazing animals such as cattle or buffalo and feeds on the insects stirred up by their movement. It therefore stands as a symbol for the fine interplay of wildlife, habitat and natural balance.
Historical and Cultural Background
The buffalo as an ambassador of the African wilderness
The Cape buffalo, also known as the African buffalo, is a typical grazer and lives in herds ranging from a few dozen to several hundred animals. It prefers marshy areas and shaded grasslands close to water. Especially characteristic are the broad, curved horns, whose span can reach up to 1.50 meters.
As a member of the Big Five, the buffalo was once heavily hunted on big game expeditions, its population severely reduced and the species brought close to extinction. The populations have since recovered, which lends the animal on this issue an additional layer of meaning.
The Big Five of the South African Mint bring together the five animals regarded as landmarks and ambassadors of South Africa, the elephant, the lion, the buffalo, the rhinoceros and the leopard. With Big Five III the mint continues one of the most sought-after coin ranges worldwide, and the buffalo forms the fifth and final issue within it.
Exclusivity and Investment Value
Five hundred pieces for the close of a series
Only 500 pieces of this issue are released worldwide. For a 5 ounce coin in proof quality that is a remarkably small number, all the more so because it marks the conclusion of an internationally established series.
The metal itself combines the material value of 999 silver with the collector premium that strictly limited issues can develop over the years. Closing issues are often particularly sought after on the secondary market, because only the last piece makes a started series complete.
